ANTHEIL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Janice Fay ($1,300.00)

Hands-On Science Night with a Dash of Math


The grant will be used to stock the science closet with supplies and activities for this District wide event. This past year’s event again included teachers and students from the three elementary schools and from the Fisher Middle School. Some of the planned activities taking place at next year’s event include a scorpion and tarantula display, toothpick math puzzles, color chemistry, balloon rockets, and a new event the Franklin Institute Hands on Science Exhibit.

 

Susan Bozarth-Smith ($411.00)

The Piecemakers

 

This grant will use fine/visual motor and mathematic skills including measuring, cutting, sewing to create and assemble child sized quilts to give to children in need. They will learn to measure, cut, sew and tie the quilts together. The children will learn about what it is to be a child in need in the local community. A letter written by the quilt makers will accompany the quilt so that the recipient knows that children made the quilt.

Michelle Conover ($725.80)
The Language Master and Speech/Language Therapy: Perfect Together

The grant will provide for a device that translates encoded magnetic cards containing words, sentences and passages into audio signals so the listener can hear what is present in the reading material. The magnetic cards are also big enough to include corresponding visual cues of the recorded message. This devise is appealing to children and provides them with motivation to participate and focus on various skills and classroom activities successfully.

 

Susan Bozarth-Smith and Lisa Rogers ($175.00)

Perfect Partners: A Speech and OT Integrated Program to Strengthen Language and Motor Skills in Preschool Students

 

This grant will provide a program that will enable the opportunity to integrate techniques in the classroom to encourage a treatment interface between the speech and occupational therapists, classroom teachers, assistants and preschool students. Activities will be presented in an organized progression, highlighting the developments of language and fine oral and sensory motor skills. This will lead to a more effective and multidisciplinary treatment of the ‘whole child’.

 

Lisa Rogers ($225.00)

Let’s Cook Up Some Learning; Developing Social, Language, Fine Motor and Self-Help Skills

 

This grant will expose children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and other Developmental Delays to a variety of appearances, tastes, textures and temperatures of different foods. This project will also provide opportunities for the students to work together in a group to create a final product. The various cooking activities will facilitate the development of fine motor skills and expansion of vocabulary. This naturalistic environment will allow more opportunities for generalization of skills and promotion of positive peer interactions.

Donna Steinmetz ($1,200.00)

The Antheil School Helping Hands Club

 

The Antheil School Helping Hands Club is a school wide service-learning organization, the vehicle by which every child in the school participates, hands-on, in selected “learning to serve and serving to learn” projects throughout the school year. All students enrolled and can take part in making the projects successful. The separate grade levels complete outreach projects that include working with corporate partners such as The Rescue Mission of Trenton, the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen and the Mercer Street friends Food Bank.


 

LORE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Lori Cavallo ($500.43)

How to be Bully Free

 

This grant will establish a library of materials for classroom teachers to use to help all students in kindergarten through fifth grade become “bully-proof.”  The materials purchased through the grant will be valuable resources for teachers to use during Morning Meetings (an important part of the Responsive Classroom Model) to encourage students to think about and discuss the implications of bullying and also ways that students can help stop bullying.

 

Diana Mocarski ($545.00)

Little Einsteins’ Learning Adventures, Part 1: Life Science

 

This grant covers the purchase of nonfiction science texts at the kindergarten and first-grade reading levels.  These texts, containing bright, vibrant photographs and spanning a number of different subjects in the Plants/Ecosystems and Animals science units, will increase all first-grade students’ exposure and access to nonfiction, which literacy research shows is important in a number of different ways. 

 

Tracy Radler ($856.67)

Grammar Grand Prix

 

This grant allows for the integration of the Language Arts curriculum into the Physical Education curriculum.  The purchase of physical education materials and equipment such as scooters, safety cones, and hula-hoops will be used to create a racetrack.  The racetrack will be part of a lesson that reinforces specific Language Arts elements, such as parts of speech.  One example might be for students to identify parts of speech from a word bank and then scoot around the racetrack as part of a team activity. All Lore students in kindergarten through fifth grade will be able to participate in this lesson combining motor skills with Language Arts skills.

 

Suzanne Merrill ($435.60)

Grades 3-5 Science Supplemental Texts for Developing Readers

 

This grant covers the purchase of texts that supplement the science curriculum in third, fourth, and fifth grades.  These individually selected texts are designed to illustrate scientific concepts in a more accessible way for developing readers, thereby helping students develop and expand both their science vocabulary and their overall comprehension of science ideas.


Robin La Bella & Sharon Sharlin  ($899.00)

Mimio Board: Mathematics, Science, Language Arts, and Social Studies

 

This grant allows for the purchase of an interactive whiteboard to be used by the entire fourth and fifth grades and by students in the AIM and ACE programs.  In addition to allowing students the chance to explore and enhance mathematical, science, language arts, and social studies concepts through interactive means, the Mimio board purchase will also allow Ms. LaBella and Mrs. Sharlin to collaborate with colleagues to plan and design lessons that integrate the use of this technology into the everyday classroom.

 

 

PARKWAY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Nicole Mulry ($879.00)

Developing a Nose for News

 

This grant will help Parkway ACE students learn how to use technology and their writing skills to create a school-wide blog and printed flyers once a month. Students will use cameras, printers and laptops to create a blog and a printed publication for school wide publication each month. The students will use the school calendar to choose current events, staff members of the month to interview and give previews of upcoming events. The program will support the Positive Behavior Support System utilized in Parkway by having a student in each class highlighted as the Citizen of the Month for showing exemplary character and good citizenship.

 

Christine Kohut ($611.12)

Being Healthy One Mile at a Time

 

Students will meet twice weekly to walk a course, outlined on school property, that equals one mile. Students will make personal goals while the coordinator will work to develop a grade level goal based on collective student achievement. The routine will be established with the 5th grade and then will move down to the 4th grade and so on, potentially involving 450 students.

 

 

Jana Baitzel ($1,314.50)

CPS Spark Clickers

 

The clickers are a radio-frequency student response system that delivers instant results of students’ understanding of a subject taught. Students can use a pad to answer multiple-choice, true/false and yes/no questions. The buttons are color-coded and easy to use allowing all students to be involved in a lesson. If it is used is a classroom with a digital projector, a graph is instantly generated to show the whole class’ answers. Teachers will be able to quickly and efficiently assess students’ understanding to guide his/her instruction on the spot. Clickers would be available for teachers to sign out for use in all classrooms in the entire school.

A Caring Connection: Creating Core Character and Principles in Children

 

This grant will be used to develop a didactic social guidance group after school, being open to students who demonstrate a need or an interest in pursuing an opportunity to learn how to communicate more effectively and to understand their role in the dynamics of their classroom. It will allow 3rd and 4th graders to develop the moral reasoning that is necessary for children to build core character principles such as tolerance, respect effective communication and social problem solving skills.

SMART KIDS Rule in Ewing Program

(Dedicated Funding from Credit Union of New Jersey)

 

SMART KIDS Rule is a reward system introduced to all students at the beginning of the school year.  Its goal is to encourage and reward students to make the honor roll, where they are able to receive tangible rewards including recognition in a school assembly.

Peer Leadership Program

 

The Peer Leadership Program will provide opportunities for students with leadership potential to develop and exercise their skills by teaching and leading school peers (younger students) on anti-bullying, no-name calling, and other youth related topics that have a negative impact on school climate and self-esteem.

 

Rebecca Palmer Romanko ($229.98)

FLIP Camera: Multimedia Language Arts

 

The FLIP cameras help students to incorporate technology in Language Arts classes, to provide the opportunity to write a script for a potential commercial that advertise a book they've read. FLIP is a motivational tool that helps students become fully engaged in their pre or post reading projects; support comprehension skills, project planning and response to text; build community amongst peers; and create family involvement presentations.

2011 World Book Encyclopedia

 

This grant will provide an updated informational print resource for students. The 2011 World Book Encyclopedia is an up-to-date resource for broad information overviews, and a trusted resource for verifying information found using general online and timelines. The series includes visuals, comprehensive questions, outlines and timelines.

Synthesizing Mathematics and Technology: E-Beam

 

The E-Beam system integrates digital information into teaching, presenting, brainstorming, and student collaboration to create a more dynamic, rigorously paced, engaging classroom. The system allows teacher and students to discover Mathematics and multiple problem-solving approaches and strategies with hands-on experience that combines 21st century technology.

 

 

EWING HIGH SCHOOL

ELEANOR HORNE AWARD

Ellen Davila ($1,500) 

Turning Them on  to Reading: Thrillers, Chillers and Tear Spillers

 

This grant will provide EHS students and teachers with a fiction collection of high interest books geared for all reading levels in all 3 genres in order to increase literacy of students and help with teacher collaboration to develop reading lists and reading processes.

 

Christopher Heywood ($1,394.74)

NJ Trout in the Classroom Program

 

The primary goal for this grant is to purchase freshwater tank and equipment so that the students can raise Brook Trout eggs to fingerlings. Students will learn about the importance of coldwater conservation and the at risk ecosystems in relation to all organisms.

Innovative Use of Technology in Chemistry Education

 

The funds will equip a science lab with data collections and digitations equipment to increase innovative and successful methodology to be used with software compatible with the school’s computers.  This is a partial grant to fund the Honors and AP Chemistry courses.

 

Craig Halpern ($2,001.00)

Innovative Use of Technology in Physics Education-2

 

The funds will equip a science lab with data collections and digitations equipment to increase innovative and successful methodology to be used with software compatible with the school’s computers.  This is a follow-up grant to expand a previously funded grant from 2007.


Kelly Kawalek and Nicole Bailey-Williams ($906.68)

An Author in Our Midst:  A Little Piece of Sky

 

The grant will purchase the books for English II curriculum.  Having the students read a book written by their teacher will provide a unique experience where the students can ask questions regarding the book, the process of writing, publishing and public relations as it pertains to marketing.

Nancy Chodoroff and Marna Lampe ($411.67)

From Reading to Math:  How Best Practices in Literacy Can Make You a Better Math Teacher.

 

Teachers across grade levels and elementary schools will meet to study a professional publication:  From Reading to Math:  How Best Practices in Literacy Can Make You a Better Math Teacher.  Those involved, will examine best practices in literacy and highlight how these practices can be transferred to the mathematics classroom.  An expectation from the district is that the students will read with increased comprehension.
